Three words sum up Syriana: shades of grey.
Bob Barnes (George Clooney) can be seen as a patriotic U.S. operative who will do anything to fulfill his duties, including withstand ungodly amounts of torture. He can also be viewed as a traitor who tried to foul up an assassination attempt by the U.S goverment.
American oil executives are a group of men who help feed the U.S. consumer's growing thirst for oil. They are also corrupt, immoral vultures who prey upon anybody that hurts their bottom line.
Prince Nasir is a thorn in the side of U.S oil interests. The heir apparent is also a well educated, progressive intellectual who will do everything in his power to bring social and economic reform to his country.
Bryan Woodman (Matt Damon) profits from the death of his son, while helping Nasir realize his dream.
The U.S goverment is, well, the U.S. goverment, and probably the only "character" that can be seen as pure evil.
It's been said that great movies leave you thinking after the closing credits. If we use this standard, Syriana certainly qualifies as a great movie.
